What is a vaginal yeast infection?

Is your vagina feeling itchy and irritated? Have you noticed a thick, white and clumpy discharge? Do you even feel a burning sensation around the vaginal opening when you go to the bathroom? Then you may very well have a yeast infection – and you’re not alone. As many as three out of four women have yeast at least once in their lifetime and many women suffer from recurring infections. Fortunately, yeast infections are not dangerous and most of them are easily treated and prevented with products that you can buy online or find at your local pharmacy.

Vaginal yeast infection symptoms

A vaginal yeast infection affects both the vagina and the vulva and the symptoms can range anywhere from very mild to severe. If you have a yeast infection, you’ll likely experience some or all of these common symptoms:

  • Itching and irritation in the vaginal area
  • White, thick and clumpy discharge, similar to cottage cheese
  • Redness in and around the vagina
  • Swollen vulva
  • A burning feeling during urination or sex

Severe yeast infections that cause extreme itching can also lead to painful cracks, tears and sores in the vaginal area.

Vaginal yeast infection treatment

The standard treatment for Candida albicans is antifungal medicine in the form of tablets, creams and suppositories, either over-the-counter or prescribed by a doctor. While antifungal medications are usually effective in the short term, they can disturb the vaginal flora and often come with some unwanted side effects. In fact, as many as one in three women get another yeast infection within 3-6 months of using antifungal medication. A kinder yeast infection symptom treatment is Multi-Gyn FloraPlus, a natural based prebiotic gel.

How to treat a yeast infection

Multi-Gyn FloraPlus is a prebiotic gel that treats yeast infection symptoms by supporting the “good” bacteria and optimizing the pH level in your vagina. Use Multi-Gyn FloraPlus whenever your vagina needs a little help but especially when:

  • you’ve just had your period
  • you’ve had unprotected sex
  • you’re taking or have taken antibiotics
  • you’re having symptoms like itching, irritation and discharge

To treat a vaginal yeast infection, simply squeeze the gel into the vagina at bedtime for five consecutive days. You can also use one of the single-dose tubes anytime to boost your vaginal flora. Multi-Gyn FloraPlus is a natural based product. Use it to get immediate relief from annoying yeast infection symptoms!

Vaginal yeast infection causes

The vagina is home to a vast array of bacteria, yeasts and other microorganisms that help keep the vaginal tract healthy and defend it against harmful microorganisms. But sometimes the delicate balance of microorganisms is thrown off, which can cause the vagina to become irritated and infected. Most yeast infections are due to overgrowth of a fungus called Candida albicans. Pregnancy, antibiotics use, uncontrolled diabetes, a weak immune system and high estrogen levels (for example from some types of oral contraception) are all factors that can contribute to yeast overgrowth and in turn increase your risk of infection.

Yeast or BV?

Yeast infections are sometimes mistaken for another common vaginal infection – bacterial vaginosis, or BV. Both are due to an imbalance in the vaginal flora and can cause unusual vaginal discharge, but the texture and smell of the discharge typically set them apart. If the discharge is grayish-white, watery and has a distinct smell of rotten fish, bacterial vaginosis is probably to blame. If the discharge is thick, white, odorless and resembles cottage cheese, a yeast infection is most likely the cause. If you’re not sure what’s causing your symptoms, or if you’re still having symptoms after trying an over-the-counter product, make sure to see a doctor to rule out any sexually transmitted diseases or other more serious conditions.
